Secretariat organizes meeting with partners on establishment of Tana Foundation
On 9 November, the Tana Forum Secretariat, hosted by IPSS, held a meeting with various partners to discuss the establishment of the Tana Foundation and collect views on the theme of the upcoming 2018 Tana Forum. The meeting was attended by representatives from the European Union (EU) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, as well as officials from the embassies of Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.
The theme of the 7th Tana Forum, "Ownership of Africa's Peace and Security Provision: Financing and Reforming the AU", is a response to today’s rapidly changing security environment, one in which the continent’s myriad challenges are either moderated or exacerbated by the inter-connectedness of the global policy environment and the plurality of actors within the peace and security landscape.
Some of the points raised by the participants were political will and the role of big players on the continent, the future of AU-RECs relationships, determining incentives for reform, as well as the donor-recipient relationship that affects independence v. dependency on the part of the AU and its member states.
The gathering was also an opportunity to provide an update on the establishment of the Tana Foundation, which was first announced in April 2016. The Foundation is currently pending final approval from the Ethiopian parliament, after which an endowment fund, a core programme team and physical premises will be set up. The Tana Forum’s partners, more than 20 actors from the private sector, development agencies, national governments, think tanks and international organizations, will be critical to maintaining the forum’s independence and pan-African visibility.
The 7th Tana Forum will take place on 21-22 April 2018 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
